Hematology, Hemato – oncology and Bone Marrow transplantation
Clinical Hematology is a branch of clinical medicine, dealing with diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders including blood cancers.
Which patients should visit a Clinical Hematologist ?
Patients who have an abnormality in their CBC report. For instance,
Low or High Hemoglobin value
Low or High White Blood Cell (WBC) counts
Low or High platelet counts
Following can be indicator of Hematological disorder
Weakness, loss of energy ( Anaemia)
Anemia with jaundice (Hemolytic anemia)
Bleeding/ red spots over skin or inside oral cavity (Thrombocytopenia)
Repeated infections/boils (Neutropenia)
Bone pain, Generalized body pain (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Sickle cell anemia)
Swollen leg ( Deep Venous Thrombosis – DVT)
Weight loss/ loss of appetite ( Blood cancer, Leukaemia)
Bone pain/ bone fracture ( Multiple Myeloma)
Anemia with high creatinine (Multiple Myeloma)
Swelling of gland in neck, armpit or groin ( Lymphoma)
Splenomegaly (CML, Lymphoma, Myelofibrosis)
Joint bleeding/ rare site of bleeding (Haemophilia)
Excessive menstrual bleeding without any obvious Gynaecological cause (Von Willebrand disease )
Increased haemoglobin ( Polycythaemia vera)
Excessive platelet count ( Essential Thrombocythemia)
Excessive WBC count ( Chronic Leukaemia like CLL, CML / Acute leukaemia like AML, ALL)
Excessive eosinophil count (Eosinophilia)
Thrombosis in young age (Hereditary thrombophilia)
Thalassemia/ sickle cell anaemia.
Blood Transfusion problems
Pregnancy related hematology problem
Patients who need Blood Transfusion
Bone Marrow Transplantion (Stem Cell Transplatation)
Autologus Transplant (Stem Cells collected from one’s own body)
Relapsed Hodgkin’s & Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: Mantle Cell Lymphoma, Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma and relapsed / refractory lymphoma
Multiple Myeloma: It is standard treatment as a part of initial therapy, as it prolongs survival substantially.
Allogenetic Transplant (Stem Cells collected from some one else’s body)
Leukemia: High risk Acute Myeloid Leukemia as part of consolidation therapy, Relapsed AML , Relapsed ALL
Severe Aplastic Anemia
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia – accelarated phase or blast crisis
Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anemia
Several other genetic disorders
As last resort in several advanced or refractory haematological malignancies eg. follicular lymphoma, CLL, myeloma etc
We take care of
Leukemia: Blood Cancers like AML , ALL, CML, CLL, HCL
Lymphoma: Hodgkin’s & Non Hodgkin’s, all subtypes
Multiple Myeloma and related Plasma Cell Dyscrasias
Myelodysplastic Syndrome and related diseases
Clotting / Thrombotic disorders
Bleeding problems: excessive bleeding after injury or operation, heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding or bruising without injury
Anemia
Low Platelets: ITP, TTP and
Pancytopenia & Leucopenia
Pregnancy related blood diseases
