What are fibroids?
Fibroids are benign(non-cancerous) tumors, formed in the muscle tissues of the uterus. Also commonly known as myomas or leiomyomas.
Fibroids develop when a single muscle cell in the uterine wall multiplies and expands to produce a benign tumour. They can alter the uterus’ size or shape, as well as the size of the cervix(occasionally).
In some cases, fibroids are meant to affect fertility in women. But all fibroids are not necessarily harmful or responsible for the condition of infertility.
Types of fibroids?
There are three most common types of fibroids found in women, these are ;
1. Intramural fibroids
these are located inside the uterus walls, if these are greater than 5cm in size, or if one of its corners touches the uterus walls, in such cases, it can be a significant cause of infertility in women.
2. Submucosal fibroids
these are located quite near the uterus lining , most of the time these are the main reason for the condition of infertility in women,
3. Subserosal fibroids
the presence of subserosal fibroids does not disturb the fertility of women in any form.
There are the following three factors that your doctor might take into consideration before recommending the ideal treatment for fibroids,
- Size of fibroid: fibroids greater than 5cm are considered significant.
- Location: if it is closer to the uterus lining, it is extremely necessary to remove it, in other cases it hardly affects the fertility of women.
- Number of fibroids: if they are larger in number, they should be treated early.
Other factors affecting fertility in women :
- Husband’s semen analysis
- If the fallopian tubes are open
Medical treatment is generally not recommended to treat fibroids or infertility existing in women due to any reasons. Going for IVF is the safest option that your doctor might suggest for women with the condition of infertility.
According to Dr. Priya Bhave Chittawar, there are few injections available that reduce the size of fibroids for a certain time period, during which time, the gynecologist can prefer to perform the IVF technique on the patient.
In case of existing advanced symptoms over time, the doctor generally advises getting the fibroid removed surgically. In over 99% of the cases, the treatment is done using the Myomectomy(a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids) procedure.
It is to be considered that fibroids are extremely common. In almost 60-70 % of the cases, the fibroids are left untreated. Women with fibroids who are aged greater than 45 are often advised to remove the whole uterus and not just the fibroid.
Other treatment procedures to get rid of fibroids surgically :
After receiving the requisite treatment from your medical specialist, after an interval period of 3 to 4 months, the patient can try for pregnancy.
